6:00 PM - Business Meeting - Reports of happenings within CCGC and upcoming events and programs. 7:00 PM - Our speaker this month is Jon White. He is a Professional Geologist with almost 40 years of experience. He has been with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) for the last 34 years and, while semi-retired, works part-time managing the CGS Geologic Mapping Program. Jon’s expertise includes geologic mapping, surficial geology, geomorphology, landslide hazards, and geologic hazard mapping and hazard assessment. He was the senior author of the CGS West Salt Creek Landslide publication and led the mapping program of the Grand Mesa project area. He has authored or coauthored numerous papers and publications, technical presentations, web-site content, geologic maps, and field trip guidebooks. He has received several awards for his work from professional organizations. His curriculum vitae can be seen at: https://coloradogeologicalsurvey.org/about/cgs-staff/jonathan-white/ The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. Jon will be discussing the West Salt Creek Landslide from May 25, 2014. A large rock avalanche (sturzstrom) occurred in rural Western Colorado, about 38 miles east of Grand Junction at an elevation of approximately 9,500 feet. The rock avalanche was initiated by a disturbed 2,900-foot wide and 900-foot-deep block of Green River Formation that slipped along a preexisting landslide shear plane. As the rockmass (composed of shale, marlstone, and oil shale) rotated, the heaved and oversteepend front disaggregated and the pulverized rockmass “flowed” in discrete rock avalanche surges 2.8 miles down valley. The deposits ultimately covered nearly one square mile of the West Salt Creek valley. There was small, precursor landslide activity early that morning that blocked an irrigation ditch. Three local men investigating the blockage were killed by the main catastrophic failure at 5:45 PM MDT. Program list for 2023
